Apple News Recap

For those that missed out on today's event at Apple HQ, out of boredom (and kindness) I have decided to provide a brief summary of the news announced at the apple event this afternoon.

iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5C, as mentioned in my previous blog entry, has the same functionality of the iPhone 5. The major difference between the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5 is how it looks physically.  Ideally, the phone is made of plastic, but technically, it is not a run of the mill, cheaply made, fragile, plastic phone.  Available in blue, green, yellow, red, and white, the solid plastic of the iPhone 5C is built around a steel reinforced frame. This phone will be released running iOS 7, which appears to have been designed to match the colors of this particular iPhone. Physically, the iPhone 5C is bold, clean, and sturdy.

Although there was not a lot of discussion about battery life for the 5C model, the A6 chip is supposed to be energy efficient. According to Apple's website, the phone is expected to allow up to "10 hours of LTE browsing time, 10 hours of talk time, and 10 hours of video playback time". An energy efficient iPhone will also allow users to enjoy more time using more of the device's features such as sharp quality photos taken with an 8MP front facing camera along with the new camera application that allows for filtering and reformatting. Additionally, iPhone 5C users may appreciate the HD video capture with 3x zoom, and video stabilization. The front facing camera (most commonly used for FaceTime and taking "selfies") is HD.

Probably the most amazing thing about the iPhone 5C is that prices start as low at $99 for a 16GB device with a 2 year contract. The 32GB 5S will go for $199 with a 2 year contract. Unlocked 16GB and 32GB devices will sell for $549 and $649 respectively. Consumers may begin pre-ordering the phone on September 13, 2013 and it will be available in retail stores beginning September 20, 2013.

iPhone 5S

Apple has always been a forerunner for mobile technology. The unveiling of the  iPhone 5S proves just that.  The iPhone 5S features an A7 chip that offers a 64-bit desktop-class architecture, 2x general-purpose registers, 2x floating-point registers, and one 1 billion transistors. All built in apps have been re-engineered to support the advanced hardware, but the phone is still expected to run both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. This means improved CPU performance and graphic performance. The phone is expected to perform processes five times faster than the iPhone 5. Additionally, there is a new part called the M7 that focuses on measuring data from senors that allows the iPhone 5S to accommodate health an fitness apps like never before. It utilizes new "CoreMotion API" in order to "identify user movement". Nike+ Move is built into the new phone, and "uses the M7 chip and GPS to keep track of activity you take part in throughout the day".

With this type of performance, you would expect that the iPhone 5S would require a pocket charger or a similar device every 30 minutes. Apple claims that the battery life for the iPhone 5S will provide up to 10 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of wi-fi browsing, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music, or 250 hours of standby from a single charge.

Apple has also improved the camera on the iPhone 5S. The idea is that "bigger pixels = better picture" since "bigger pixels let in more light, better color, and less noise". The improved camera also auto adjusts exposure, flash and other settings in order to provide a better picture. The quality of pictures are improved thanks to real time analysis of picture from the iPhone 5S: photos are taken at a rate of 10 frames per second, and the A7 then decides which is the best. It is also fair to mention the auto-image stabilization, sharper action shots, and improve video capability are impressive features of the iPhone 5S camera. This iPhone model also features a front flash, which is a much needed improvement from previous models, especially to those of us that like to take several pictures. :-)

The last big feature for the iPhone 5S is Touch ID: the enhanced security from Apple that utilizes a fingerprint sensor. Biometric security has come a long way, and now it can be found on your iPhone. Touch ID is embedded in the home button, therefore users can just touch the home button to unlock the device. It can also be used to purchase music, movies, apps, books etc from the Apple store. According Apple, the encrypted fingerprint never leaves the device: "it never goes out the the iCloud, it never touches apple servers, it is only on the A7 and is only decryptable via the Touch ID software".

The iPhone 5 is available in gold, space grey, and white. The 16GB phone starts at $199, 32GB is $299 and the 64GB is $399. Note: all prices previously started are based on a two year contract. Apple will sell unlocked 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB devices for $649, $749, and $849 respectively. Apple will not provide pre-order sales for the iPhone 5S, but it will be available in stores beginning September 20, 2013.

iOS 7

With the release of iOS 7 right around the corner (Apple has it set for September 18, 2013), it would also be helpful to understand what new features are being provided with this OS in relation to the new devices. While the built in apps are mostly the same on both devices, there are several apps that are now available for free in the app store. It was announced today that all iWorks apps including iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will all be free to iPhone 5C and 5S users. I have not been able to confirm whether they will be offered for free to users still using previous iPhone models.

Both the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S were build specifically to work with iOS 7 and beyond, so don't be too upset if your iPhone 4/4S does not/cannot take advantage of all the new functionality.
