Blackberry Messenger: Too Good To Not Share

Since the release of the new BlackBerry Z10 in late March, BlackBerry (formerly known as Research In Motion or RIM) has taken a huge leap back into the competitive world of smart phones. While the BlackBerry Z10 has several new features that are considered foreign on previous BlackBerry devices, there are several features that remain on the device that are unique to BlackBerry.  Specifically, BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM, is a popular messenger tool used by millions of active users everyday.  I personally believe that it was probably one of the best features provided on older BlackBerry devices.

It has been announced that BBM will become a multi-platform, stand alone application on iOS 6 and Android Ice Cream Sandwich devices beginning this summer.  The improved BBM application on the new BlackBerry 10 platform is rather impressive, offering new modern features such as video chat, screen sharing, voice capability over wifi connections, and social application integration.  This type of capability packed into a single application proves worthiness to be shared amongst several platforms.  It is likely that iPhone and Android users will benefit and enjoy these features, and BlackBerry users will finally be able to enjoy BBM with non-BlackBerry users.

The first release of BBM for iOS and Android will be only the basic messenger. The company plans to develop more functional versions of the new application throughout the summer, releasing updated versions every two to four weeks. Updates will include the fore mention capability that is currently provided on the BlackBerry platform.

This sort of expansion will allow non-BlackBerry users to get a feel of the type of capabilities BlackBerry offers without them having to purchase a BlackBerry. This is a smart move for BlackBerry as a company considering that several people are still skeptical about BlackBerry devices, unsure if they can meet their needs as consumers, or even keep up with modern smart phone devices.  Giving iOS and Android users an opportunity to "test drive" the power of the BlackBerry 10 platform can allow opportunities for more consumer input, market expansion, and the chance raise consumer confidence in BlackBerry products.
